Dokdo Island is protected by sapsalgaes (sapsal dogs), a breed native to Korea.

This indigenous breed was almost wiped from existence during a mass slaughter by the Japanese during their colonial rule over Korea.

After many years of hard word, sapsals have been brought back from the brink of extinction and can be found across the country – even Dokdo, where they are guardians of the islets.

This is the story of sapsalgaes, and their 2000-year history.
